Film and Fiction Walking Tour of Carnegie Hill: Movie Locations on Museum Mile

Half of Hollywood seems to have filmed on these few blocks of the Upper East Side, and this two-hour walk points out where. It starts on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 82nd Street and ends at the Guggenheim at 88th, but the route in between wanders through Carnegie Hill along Fifth, Madison and Park Avenues. The guide, a licensed New York City sightseeing guide who has been written up in the New York Post's Page Six, stops for three to ten minutes at each spot to describe what was shot there. Scenes from 84 Charing Cross Road, Six Degrees of Separation, The House on 92nd Street, Ransom and When Harry Met Sally are on the list, plus The Devil's Advocate at the Church of Heavenly Rest and Men in Black and Mr. Popper's Penguins outside the Guggenheim. Then there are the neighbors. The walk passes the homes of Ralph Lauren, Faye Dunaway, Anthony Bourdain, Katie Couric, J.D. Salinger, Truman Capote, Marlene Dietrich, Robert Redford, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Mike Nichols, among others, and the Fifth Avenue mansion where Lady Gaga went to high school. The buildings hold their own: Andrew Carnegie's mansion, now the Cooper Hewitt design museum with its public garden; the Jewish Museum in its French château-style house; Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim. There is also a look at the waterbirds on the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park. The tour goes ahead in all weather, so dress for it. Expect a moderate amount of walking. Children must be with an adult, and bookings take up to 15 people. Museum admission is not included.
