New York CityFifth Avenue along Central Park was once a wall of private palaces. Most were torn down within a few decades, and this two-hour walk with an Untapped New York guide goes looking for what is left, and for the gaps where the rest used to be. The tour starts at the gilded Sherman statue at 59th Street and heads north. On the way you stand on the footprint of one of the largest private houses ever built in Manhattan, hear some of the history of the Frick Collection from across the street, and step into a bookshop that now occupies a Fifth Avenue mansion. There is also one of the last mansions on the avenue still built as a single residence, and the oldest building on Millionaire's Row. The stories are about money, mostly: what it bought, who designed it, and the art these families collected. They are told on the same sidewalks where it all happened, with Temple Emanu-El, the Arsenal in Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art along the route. Entry to the museums and the zoo you pass is not included. Earpieces are provided, so you can hear the guide even from a few steps back. Tips are not included. The walk ends at 975 Fifth Avenue.
