Griffins, Goblets and Gold: Interactive Magical Arts Tour at the Met

Anyone who grew up with a certain well-loved book series about wizards will find plenty that looks familiar inside the Metropolitan Museum. This two-hour 'Magical Arts' tour, called Griffins, Goblets and Gold, goes looking for it: rooms and spaces that could have come out of the books, part of a real castle, and mythical creatures that bear a strong resemblance to the ones in the story. You see the museum from a wizard's point of view. There are activities along the way, all the creative supplies are provided, and there may be a spot of magic before the end. Wizarding gear is encouraged, with one rule: wands have to be small enough to fit in a bag. Be clear on one point before booking. The Met has no objects or replicas from the films, and the tour has no link to the author, the publishers or the film studio: it is not endorsed by or affiliated with J.K. Rowling, Bloomsbury Publishing, Arthur Levine Books, Scholastic, Little, Brown, Pottermore or Warner Bros. What it has is real art, seen through the story. The tour is recommended for ages 8 and up, bookings are limited to 6 travelers, and it is guided in English. Advance reservations are required. When the two hours are up you are welcome to stay on in the museum. Wear comfortable shoes. The guide meets you in the Great Hall at the giant seated Pharaoh, to the right of the information desk, holding a sign with the tour name and your tickets. If you are running late, call or text and the tickets will be left at the group check-in desk. Allow time for the Met's security check at the entrance. The route is wheelchair accessible, the museum has wheelchairs available, and strollers and service animals are welcome. If there is anything about your group the guide should know, tell the operator in advance.
