Met Museum Highlights and New York Stories Guided Tour

The Met holds 5,000 years of civilization from every corner of the world, and it is easy to spend an afternoon inside and still miss the pieces you came for. This 2.5-hour guided tour puts the must-sees in a sensible order and ties them to one thread: how each of them fits into the story of New York City. The route begins where civilization begins, in the tombs of ancient Egypt, where wooden figures some 4,000 years old survived in the dark. Then come Roman frescoes painted around 50 to 40 BC, which the eruption of Vesuvius buried under volcanic ash more than a century later, and Henry VIII's armor, read as Renaissance high fashion rather than battle gear. The American galleries bring the showpieces of the Gilded Age, and the European paintings bring the Impressionists who turned the Paris art world upside down. Entrance fees are included, bookings go up to 15 travelers, and the guide speaks English. You meet just inside the main entrance, by the pharaoh statue on your right. Like every visitor, you pass the security check before that. Plan your date around one rule: the Met is closed on Wednesdays. If the booking calendar shows a Wednesday departure, the museum is closed that day, so choose another one. Galleries also open and close. The Ancient Near East rooms, which the guide likes to read alongside Biblical stories, belong to the Met's Ancient West Asian galleries, closed for renovation with reopening announced for 2027. The museum does not guarantee that every gallery is open on a given day, and the Temple of Dendur's gallery has been temporarily closed at times too.
