The Met is one of the largest and best known art museums in the world, and its collection spans more than 5,000 years. Two hours is not long in a building that size. With a private guide and nobody else's pace to follow, it is enough to see the works that matter most to you and understand why they are there. The tour starts outside, not in the Great Hall. Your guide meets you in front of the Benjamin Duke House at 1009 Fifth Avenue, a short walk from the museum steps. Museum tickets are included in the price, so from there you head straight in, through the security check that every visitor passes, and into the galleries. The group is yours alone, up to 10 people per booking, and the tour is in English. There is time built in for photos, so nobody has to rush past a favourite room to keep up. Strollers and wheelchairs can come along, but two hours on foot adds up, and a moderate level of fitness helps. The tour finishes inside the museum. That leaves you free to stay on and keep looking after the guide leaves, or to find something to eat: food and drink are not included, though your guide is happy to point you to local favourites. A few practical points. Gratuities are optional and not included, and so are hotel pickup and any transport on the day. The Fifth Avenue building is open until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, closes at 5 pm on other days and is closed on Wednesdays.
