The Met is far too big for one visit, and most people who try end up drifting between wings without a plan. This tour gives you one. An art historian guide leads a group of no more than 18 people straight to the highlights of the collection: Greek and Roman statuary, the Temple of Dendur, the ancient Pompeian room, Sargent's 'Madame X' and 'Washington Crossing the Delaware'. Along the way the talk takes in jewellery, ancient objects and the architecture of the building itself. Your admission ticket is part of the booking, so there is nothing to buy at the door. Everyone still goes through the museum's security check, which can take up to 15 minutes, so plan to arrive early. The tour comes in two lengths, 2 hours or 3 hours. Pick the one that fits your day when you book. A note on the Temple of Dendur: the museum does not guarantee that every gallery is open on a given day, and the temple's gallery has been temporarily closed at times. If the temple is the main reason you are booking, check the Met's website before you go. Your guide reshapes the route around any room that is shut.

    Get there 15 minutes before the start. The tour meets inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 1000 5th Ave: head to the main lobby, to the right of the information desk, in front of the large seated Pharaoh. Your guide will be holding a yellow WalksDevour sign.

    Climb the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a New York landmark since it was founded in 1870, with 5,000 years of art inside. Your guide takes you past models of Egyptian tombs to the Temple of Dendur, built around 15-10 BC under Augustus, when Egypt was a Roman province. Next comes Tudor England and the suit of armor made for Henry VIII, and the Antioch Chalice with the Holy Grail legends that surround it. In the Greek and Roman galleries you see ancient frescoes and portrait busts of emperors. You also hear about the scandal around John Singer Sargent's 'Madame X', and the guide mixes the famous pieces with a few that most visitors walk straight past. Choose between the 2-hour and 3-hour options.
