The ticket covers more than 40 permanent exhibition halls, the Rose Center for Earth and Space and the Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation among them. Most visitors go to the dinosaurs first. The fossil halls hold the skeletons the museum is known for, and they are the reason so many New Yorkers remember this building from school trips. The dioramas come next. Each one sets a single ecosystem behind glass, animals in front and a painted landscape behind, and they are better read slowly than walked past on the way to somewhere else. The Rose Center is the museum's space wing, where the exhibits turn to the planets and the wider universe, and it is also where the planetarium is. What this ticket lists is general admission and the permanent halls. If a planetarium show is the main reason for your visit, check what your booking covers before you go rather than at the door. The mineral and gem collection takes the geology side of the story, with specimens chosen to explain how the Earth itself formed. The Gilder Center is the newest part of the museum and connects to the older halls, so it is easy to fold into a visit without doubling back. There is a lot of ground here. Choosing a few halls and giving them proper time works better than trying to see all forty in one go.
