Whitney Museum of American Art Admission Ticket with Free Daily Tours

The Whitney collects one thing: art made in the United States, from the early twentieth century to artists who are working right now. This ticket covers admission to the museum at 99 Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District at the southern end of the High Line, and the free daily tours the museum runs inside. The names most people come for are on the walls. Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, Alexander Calder and Jackson Pollock are in the collection, and the museum shows living artists alongside them. That mix is the point of the place. Seeing the familiar names and the newest work on the same visit tells you more about American art than either would on its own. The building is by Renzo Piano and sits between the High Line and the Hudson River. The galleries take in a lot of natural light, and the outdoor terraces look out over the river and the Manhattan skyline, so leave time to step outside between floors. Every two years the museum also stages the Whitney Biennial, its survey of recent American art. The free daily tours are included in the ticket and are a good way to get your bearings in the collection before wandering on your own. Guiding is available in English and Spanish. Allow around two hours for the visit. Food and drinks are not included, but they are sold at the museum. Once you are out, the High Line, Chelsea Market and Greenwich Village, where Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the museum in 1930, are all within walking distance.
